The Ottawa School
1867

School_Ottawa

The Ottawa School was built in 1867 to educate local children and serve as the Ottawa community house. The structure provided a meeting place for church services, social events, and elections. The wooden frame with gabled roof was built by the early settlers from timber found in this small lumbering village. The two entrances were presumed to be designated one for the girls and one for the boys. A woodshed, outhouse, and pump were out in the back. A wood stove was the source of heat and kerosene lamps provided light. The bell in the belfry rang to call the children to school. The schoolhouse is the only remaining original community building standing in Ottawa Station today.
